We know it can be difficult to find the right words and ways to talk to children about the unusual situation we face. We want to give them information that is appropriate for their age; we want to help them understand why they are at home and not at school or with other family members; we want them to wash their hands and take care and most importantly, we want them to know that they are safe and that we will take care of them.
In order to help you do this we are providing you with what we call “Social Stories”. These are stories intended to simply: explain a situation; help a child express their emotions; assist a child in doing something (like washing their hands) and finally to reassure them that they are safe. We designed them for children with and without special needs and also for children of various ages:Toddler; Young children and older children. Feel free to use the story that you think best suits your child. You can either scroll through each page on a computer or IPAD or print the pages out as a book. We suggest you regularly take some quiet time with your child or children and read the book together. Point at either the pictures or the words as you go. Pause before turning each page to wait and see if your child has a question or anything to add. Remember, only answer the question being asked rather than giving too much information. The next day your child might ask a different question. Feel free to add a few personalized details into the story as you go, referring to people and activities that the child will relate to best. Practice songs and actions mentioned in the book together. As you know best, children love to have stories repeated and repeated so that eventually they can recite the words themselves. So feel free to re-visit these often. This kind of repetition brings comfort and confidence. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need some support in getting started. Take care. |

During this cold/flu season, many families are finding themselves having to bring their little ones for a Covid screening. We understand that this process can sometimes be difficult or challenging for parents as our little ones are not sure of what to expect and are sometimes fearful or anxious about the testing process. In order to help children and families in this situation, we have prepared a social story which you can read to your child prior to going for the testing.
Our hope is that by reading the story together in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere, caregivers may be able to ease some of the anxiety which our little ones are experiencing around this process.
